Title: Tax Cuts Raise Expectations for Economy in 2011
Author: Jeannine Aversa
Source: Yahoo! News
With the recent tax cuts, Americans will have more spending money in their pockets, making economists predict that the upcoming year's economy will start out bright. It is predicted that economic growth may reach about 4 percent which would be the largest growth since the year 2000. However, the economy is improving slowly so it isn't having a substantial effect on the housing market yet, and the growth is not expected to be enough to lower the 9.8% unemployment rate. Analysists predict that lowering the unemployment rate to a normal level could take up to a decade. Despite the lack of immediate benefit, this economic growth will be highly advantageous to America in the long run. It is the beginning of a potentially long-term improvement in our economy that will result in countless benefits to Americans. The tax cuts have made our economy take a positive turn that will result in a significant improvement for many Americans.

Title: Tests on toys find few problems this season
Author: Jennifer C. Kerr
Source: Yahoo News
In a recent mass test on toy products, only 4 of the 260 items were found to be hazardous. Toys may be deemed unsafe if they contain high levels of lead, other metals, or harmful chemicals or if they pose a choking hazard or other dangers. An excess of lead can cause major brain damage and other metals and chemicals that can be found in the toys can lead to other serious health issues. With the passing of the 2008 law that set stricter standards for these products, the number of toys found dangerous and recalled from stores has gone down considerably and children's products are currently safer than ever. This is a much welcomed relief to families everywhere. The decline in the number of hazardous toys provided to the public will help prevent toy related health problems, injuries, and deaths and will save more children year after year with the continuation of enforcing stricter and safer regulations on children's products.

Title: "New hologram technology brings 3-D to life"
Author: Julie Steenhuysen
Source: Yahoo! News
Nasser Peyghambarian of the University of Arizona and his colleagues were excited to inform that their new 3-D technology allows them to project an almost 360 degree holographic image that updates every two seconds. This advancement in the technology has brought them close to having the ability to create live 3-D images. The way it works is that multiple cameras take color images of the subject at several different angles to capture the image in 3-D and then send it over an Ethernet line. One advantage of this new technology is that holograms don't require the glasses we wear in order to experience a 3-D movie. Also, every angle of the object or person is presented, so those behind it would see the back of the person or object, the people in front would see the front of it, etc. This new holographic technology could have many uses. It could be used for 3-D movies that have been recently gaining much popularity. It could also be used for video conferences. Instead of just seeing the other person's face on the computer screen it would be like the person was right there in the room with you. I think this futuristic technology is very advantageous and will be even more so when it is improved to its full capacity.

Title: Tracking Offshored Jobs
Author: Steven Greenhouse
Periodical: The New York Times (Online)
A new website has been launched by the nation's main union federation, A.F.L.-C.I.O. that allows users to track outsourcing simply by typing in an address. The website provides a list of companies that have sent jobs overseas. For many Americans, this will only fuel the anger over the vast and increasing number of outsourced jobs that have given rise to the number of unemployed people in our country and that has had a huge effect on our economy. I think this website will push more Americans to take a stand against the sending of our jobs overseas and that we may come closer to changing the current state of things. If this happens, our economy can bounce back with a decrease in the unemployment rate.

Title: Blockbuster, Hoping to Reinvent Itself, Files for Bankruptcy
Author: MICHAEL J. de la MERCED
Periodical: The New York Times (Online)
Due to their large amount of debt and struggle against competing companies, Blockbuster has decided to file for bankruptcy. By doing this they hope that they will be able to recreate themselves to be a stronger competitor against the leading video rental companies such as Netflix. It will also eliminate most of their $1 billion debt. I think that if Blockbuster succeeds in making their company better and more appealing to consumers, it may regain its spot as one of the leading movie rental companies. To become more like their competitors, Blockbuster had begun to improve it's Internet and mail based part of their company. I think it is essential that they continue to improve these to attract more customers. The reinvention of Blockbuster will influence the movie rental business and create more competition for these companies.

Title: Survey: Majority of Working Americans Doubt They'll Be Able To Retire
Author: George Ford
Periodical (online): The Gazette
A survey was taken given by New York-based StrategyOne to 1043 Americans between August 20th to August 23rd. The survey revealed that nearly 2/3 of Americans believe that they will not be able to quit their jobs and retire once they reach retirement age. The results of this survey reflect the state of our current economy. Since our economy is currently not in the best shape, nearly half of the surveyed working Americans have reported that their paycheck has been decreased. Additionally, they fear that they could lose their jobs or some of their hours. The downfall of our economy is having a huge impact on the working class. Among it's many disadvantages on our society is the fact that less retirements means fewer jobs for future generations. Hopefully, our economy will soon rebound and eliminate this issue.

Title: To Win Over Users, Gadgets Have to Be Touchable
Author: Claie Cain Miller
Periodical (Online): The New York Times
In these modern times it has become apparent that people around the world have found technology with the touch screen feature to be more appealing. This type of feature has been more widely introduced throughout the last few years through devices such as the iPod Touch/iPhone, GPS, e-readers, and a number of similar gadgets. This new
innovation has changed the way we live our day-to-day lives. Touch screens eliminate the need for keyboard and mouse, therefore detracting from the necessity for skills
associated with these devices.
The invention of the touch screen feature is a turning point in the technological and business world. It creates a greater ease in the use of technology especially the more commonly used handheld devices. Using touch screens is noticeably more instinctive and less time consuming. This innovation can greatly benefit the business world but may also hurt companies that do not use this technology to their advantage.
